I think this writer must be jealous of JK Rowling's success.

I think this gal subtly admits that she feels some envy for Rowling's success; in fact, I would be surprised if quite a few authors did not feel that way.

She does not give the reading public much credit for having a brain in their (collective) heads. She paints a picture of zombie-like hoards, programmed to buy Ms. Rowling's (and others) books just because it was written by her (or a favorite author). I, for one, do not just blindly buy a book because an author whose other work I enjoyed publishes a new book. I do my due diligence, read excerpts on the author's website and Amazon.com and then decide if I will hit that 'Click to buy' button. Many times I have not purchased a book, simply because I did not care for what I read.

What Ms. Shepard is suggesting is tantamount to asking Starbucks to stop selling coffee because it hurts other such businesses or Wal-Mart to reduce the number of items they sell to give similar retailers a fighting chance. In no way do I think that Ms. Rowling is anywhere near as powerful as these examples, just making a point. I have never had the urge to read any of her books but I certainly would not presume to dissuade anyone else buying and trying.

No struggling but relatively ambitious writer can possibly be anything other than envious. You'd be scarcely human otherwise. But this particular piece isn't about that.

Yes, it most certainly is about that.

If you are lucky her book could create what I call the "Twilight Effect". What is this Twilight Effect? Well, while I am not a fan of the Twilight Saga, I have read them all and I am eternally grateful to the author for writing books that were able to convert so many non-readers into readers. Those of us that were already avid readers were able to reap the rewards of an explosion in both the paranormal and the young adult books that were suddenly being published at an almost alarming rate. The same thing happened to the erotica genre after 50 Shades. Woot, woot!

If JKR can get her YA readers into a crime and suspense book then chances are even better for other authors in that genre to pick up some new readers.

Quote:
I didn't much mind Rowling when she was Pottering about. I've never read a word (or seen a minute) so I can't comment on whether the books were good, bad or indifferent. I did think it a shame that adults were reading them (rather than just reading them to their children, which is another thing altogether), mainly because there's so many other books out there that are surely more stimulating for grown-up minds.

This is just insulting, condescending and petty.

Quote:
By all means keep writing for kids, or for your personal pleasure - I would never deny anyone that - but when it comes to the adult market you've had your turn. Enjoy your vast fortune and the good you're doing with it, luxuriate in the love of your legions of fans, and good luck to you on both counts. But it's time to give other writers, and other writing, room to breathe.

Wow.

I looked up the author on Amazon and she is really getting slammed with one star reviews due to this article. I read Harry Potter and enjoyed every book.

I read samples of FSOG and Twilight and chose not to read either one. Both my nieces wanted the Twilight series which I bought for them. One niece decided she didn't like them after actually reading the first book and the other has read the books multiple times. Just because they were not to my taste didn't mean I would deny my nieces books they wanted.

I read the article and could not believe what I was reading. Books are like art, not everyone understands nor likes it but it does not make it bad and or wrong. There are many books out there that I have not read, because the subject matter either did not interest me or I was not into it. The Harry Potter series was one of those. But to downgrade JKR just because she was successful, that is just wrong. I will admit that I am not big on reading teen novels, but I would never make fun of an adult that does enjoy them. As a Romance reader I have been made fun because Romance was not considered "real" reading until 50 Shades came out. So I know what it feels like to have people look at you and say things like 'oh you read that trash' or 'I guess you can't read a real book'. Wonder what she thinks of 50 Shades?

And I have news for her, in her eyes I would be a "struggling but relatively ambitious writer", because I sold 24 books last year. But in my eyes I was so excited that 24 people read and hopefully enjoyed what I created that I did a happy dance(you can see it on my blog). Creating stories is not about how many copies you sell, but in what the reader gets out of what you write. That is where true success lies. Think about this, how many times in history has a book so shocked the public that they decided to go out and buy as many copies that they can; only to burn them. Yes the author made tons of money, but the people that bought the copies never read them. I would rather sell a few copies to people that love or I would take like my stories to millions buying them only because everyone else was.

Hater! Boy, I have encountered so many of those people in my life. Exact same scenario. Haters R people who R threatened by any success that is not their own.

How generous of her to allow Rowling to write for her own pleasure. How dare Rowling reap the accolades of her own success. LoL

I haven't read the new book. Not my kind of story. Perhaps that writer would care to know that in the past 3 years I have read 500 books. Plenty of room for other writers in other genre.

Loved it! Altho in my opinion she was too kind.

The original was just a hate piece that shouldn't be taken seriously in any way shape or form. When a hater gets to talk they will just spew toxic sludge.

It is just an excuse for why she isn't successful. It must be Rowling's fault! This must he her genre that Rowling is writing in and she must stop! LOL

You wouldn't believe the amt of haters Chris Colfer gets in response to his success. Bottom line is a hater is going to hate.

Rowling rocks and she is so brave for writing again on the heels of such a success. Margaret Mitchell never did and the world lost out. Hope she writes more.

He's a singer/actor/writer. Currently plays Kurt Hummel on GLEE and is writing a series of childrens books (2 published & has several more under contract.) He's also openly gay...so that's probably what the "hater" comments are about...I don't spend much time on any boards other than book-related ones, so I'm not positive about that.

The hater comments were about his book which is terrific! This was on Goodreads. People were commenting that his book is successful only due to his fame. I never even knew who he was--the haters pointed it out.

Eveything they said about it was a lie. The thing is he is immensely successful and quite young. I think 21. That creates jealousy among others. He can act, sing, and write. Well, good for him!
