For me, words such as 'billionaire', 'sheik', 'submit', and 'secret' (i.e. child) in a book's title will stop me from reading it. I am not a historical romance reader, so 'Duke', 'Earl', 'Lord', etc. are also out for me. Ditto 'wolf', 'shifter' and 'vampire'...

Do you have certain words that cause you to ignore a book altogether? If so, what are they?

Billionaire, sheik, anything too Biblical (angels, Cain, Abel, religious demons), motorcycle gang.

Vampire is a half and half turn off...I'll read the back to see if the story itself appeals to me and how much it focuses on the vampire aspect.

Also, aside from suspense, I rarely read contemporary so just the setting is an automatic turnoff.

Can only think of a couple words that would turn me off reading a book:

Faeries
Healer
Sheik
Pirate

Faeries/Halflings

Wizard/Sorcerer/Witch

Ghosts
I can deal with Vamps and Shifters but nothing spooky or creepy.

For me it's words that describe the heroine:

Model
Tough (as in alpha male qualities in a female)
Bodyguard
Cop
Gorgeous
Futuristic, for male or female.
Not sure of the word to describe it but I prefer my heroes to be the vamps, etc than the females. Prefer my females to be human in those kind of stories.

Secret, as in baby or any secret
Hollywood, actor or actress
Rock star
Sports stars
Faeries/angels
Sheik
millionaires/wealthy - gimme! I don't like a lot of the names in Historical titles anymore either, which is probably why I don't read them often.

Yes, I'll add menage (or more), multiple pairings to my list. And since male on male doesn't appeal to me (I like to live vicariously through the heroine) I'll include that as well.

Lately, it's Navy Seal. I've read enough to last a lifetime. Now if it's former Navy Seal, it's OK. Sheik would be in there as is anything with a "istan" at the end. Kajistan, etc. I do not want to read about the middle East. Same goes for anyplace in Eastern Europe.

The first word that comes to mind is... feisty.

Demons
Angels,
Witch
Warlock
Sheik
Fey
Fairies
Shapeshifters
Werewolf

I suppose those would all be paranormal and while I've read some of them, not a favorite I would seek out.

I do wish the historical titles would eliminate Demon, Devil and Dark Angel to name a few from their bag of descriptions. LOL

-hero is a hunter

-secret child

-former lovers/childhood sweethearts/past relationship/friends becoming lovers - no interest

-hero/heronine who are actors, writers, pro sports players, lawyers

-heroine who is a prostitute

-any indication the book is about some tough as nails heroine (think Eve Dallas) I usually find very unlikeable

-everything Miranda listed (menage, bondange, male/male or female/female)

-amish/religious/inspirational

For the most part (with some notable exceptions) I want more dark romances than humerous (gothic is good) and I like alpha males and stories about obession. I grew up reading older romances and I really hate the political correctness that dominates what types of stories are being written today. I fully support women who want to read about feminists and mature love stories but I want passion and excitement and a hero who do anything to get the heroine.
