Do you have “go to” books when you are in a reading rut/slump? Do you re-read?

I do:
Julie Garwood’s older Historical
Nora Roberts’ Trilogy’s
Nevil Shute’s A Town Like Alice
(I do have a few others, but this is what I am using now).

I have seen some of you say that you change Genre’s, any other techniques that you have to get back reading? I try Non-fiction by looking for something to get my curiosity jumping.

I read books from the 80's. Sometimes I read spy thrillers

I simply quit reading until the urge hits me, which can be anywhere from 1 day to a week; generally, though, 3 or 4 days does the trick. Sometimes after I have read an extremely good book, I will put off starting another for a day or so. I always worry that the next book will never measure up  .

I always go back and reread the last few chapters of my favorite books.

Occasionally I will take a couple of days off from reading and play computer games.

Talk to some of my friends to see what they are reading or see if they can recommend a book.

In a slump I re-read. I've been doing a lot of re-reading lately.

All my normal thing are failing me. I have tried them all, and I am still can't seem to get out of it.
Going from reading up to 3-5 books a week to maybe one a month - and this has been going on for months - just doesn't seem my normal slump or burn out.

I watch movies, look at romantic movie endings/scenes on youtube (my favorite is the ending of North and South with Richard Armitage), and look at all the books on Amazon with my Kindle. Then when I'm finally ready to start a book, I start several at the same time and go with the one that grabs me the best.

I'm sorry you're going through this. I know just talking about books and what people liked reading helped me get enthusiastic about some selections. I don't need to read a life-changing book, but I have to feel like it was time well-spent.

Sometimes I like to go to my keeper shelf and pick out a bunch of books that I really liked and just read the good parts--enjoyable but without the time investment.

Good luck!

Usually when I get into a slump, I go back and read one of my old Linda Howard favorites. Or I read a magazine or 2, even if it's People or Star. Lately I've been reading the KGI books by Maya Banks and I think I'm back on a roll. I've got a new author (Maya Banks) with new books coming out and a little back list for in between, plus there are a bunch of books coming out over the next few months by some of my favorite authors. It's got me excited again.

Plus things have slowed down for us with extra-curricular stuff so I actually have time to read right now.

I usually read an old Linda Howard, Julie Garwood or Elizabeth Lowell or a fave BDB by JR Ward, but more recently Kristen Ashley.

BUT I'm beginning to develop a need to read her too much, so now I need to get out of the habit of re-reading her ALL THE FLIPPIN' TIME :(

I left my Kindle at home while I was away last week and took PB's away with me, read one, mostly through the 2nd by the time I got home, but NOW I'm back on the kindle re-reading KA, I think I need an intervention..... no I'm sure I need an intervention (and no I haven't finished the PB I am halfway through...no matter how many times I say "finish it!!!")

Step away from the Kindle, Klass! I know it's hard, but you'll fall in to KA land and never return. You'll be ruined for all other books! Think of those authors! Be strong!

I've tried reading something totally different than my usually reads. I pick an author I've never read, often one I've never even heard of. I've stumbled on some wonderful books that way.

I try switching genres. That usually works. However I sure read a lot less books in 2012. I read 60 books, and am never under 100.

I have picked up new hobbies now that I no longer work, and spend more hours working on them so that's why I didn't read as many books this year.

Also a lot of my old favorites have left me cold, and I have taken many authors off my auto buy list. I am sick to death of modern day sex slaves, and paranormals that authors are being forced to write because their editors tell them to go in that direction. Not just everyone can sit down and write a paranormal. There really are not that many really good ones out there anymore. So when my authors switch it up to that genre, I jump ship. The historicals are too PC for my tastes, so I only buy two authors there - Sabrina Jeffries and Connie Mason.

I always find myself in a reading slump. What I do when nothing appeals to me is to read an unread book by a favorite author (which is what I'm doing now with Catherine Coulter) or reread an old favorite.
