Ladies,
it has been way too long since I have had time to hang out. I really miss all the fun discussions here, but I have a new job that pays a lot less and does not involve computers, so I usually only have had time lately to do the emails, etc., I have to do when I get home, and little time to "hang out" online. =(

Anyway, I have been in an awful reading slump lately. I am looking for some good historicals (those who know me know i like Victorian/Regency/Edwardian/European best), and I tend to like Beta heroes/arranged marriages, etc. (Some of my favourite authors in the past have been Mary Balogh, Carla Kelly, Barbara Metzger, Fiona Hill, Georgette Heyer)
I also like historical mysteries (Anne Perry, Charles Todd, Jacqueline Winspear, Ashley Gardner) and some historical fiction (mainly Lois McMaster Bujold, Sharon Shinn, Tamora Pierce).

Has anyone read anything really good you could recommend? I have Victoria Alexander's newer book on request at the library and read the one about Eliza Cynster...but otherwise, haven't had much luck lately with finding anything when browsing shelves. My local B&N isn't very good lately at getting anything except the "big" stuff, which has made browsing lately rather boring...

May I suggest two books that have enjoyed reading recently?

"A Lady Awakened" by Cecilla Grant--This book had a very different storyline. It went into great detail in some areas that many readers might find boring, but I found interesting. I LOVED the hero right away, it took me a little while to warm up to the heroine. But it was an A read for me.

The other book I really enjoyed was "How the Marquess Was Won" by Julie Anne Long. This was a great story with a super intelligent heroine. Also a very fast read, Another A read for me. Hope this helps!

Glencora, do you read anything else?

Maybe a COMPLETE 180 on what you "usually" read and try something so out of the box, that you might possibly jumpstart yourself out of a slump.

Just a thought. I know that if I read the same genere in a row, I get SO sick of it. So I mix it up.

I like a good regency too, but I've not found one that's held my interest in a long while...

Actually even if you don't know who they are what about reading "The Dirt" by the rock band Motley Crue, even if you don't know who they are, it's a GREAT read, and really couldn't be further from what you usually read.

Let me add a book I just finished reading this evening:

"Sweet Enemy" by Heather Snow It is a Historical Romance with a very good mystery.

I also agree with Klass suggestion that you go out of your comfort zone. Sometimes that will get the reading juices flowing again. Good Luck, Lindy!

I always go back and reread a couple of my keepers! That usually helps.

Good luck!

I recommend Lauren Willig's "Pink Carnation" series.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I've re-read most of my favourites...but I may have to give the "totally different direction route" a try. And read something I normally would never read. Make a science textbook - That would qualify. (I was so bored last night I picked up a grammar book...)

Will also try the suggestions, too--will see what (if anything) my library has.

Try a children's or a young adult book when you go to your library.
I just read the Sherlock files- book 1-3 by Tracy Barrett- the brother and sister are the great, great, great grandchildren of Sherlock Holmes and are working on solving his cold cases. Great fun and quick reads which might help your reading slump.

Klass, I may read that Motely Crue book thanks for the suggestion.

Glencora, may I suggest the Hunger Games? They are really good books and very easy reads. I also advocate changing genres when you hit a reading slump. It will make you appreciate your favorite style when you go back to it.

Have you read the Sebastion St Cyr mysteries by C. S. Harris? The seventh one (WHEN MAIDENS MOURN) just came out in hardback in March, but the previous 6 are out in paperback. The first in the series is WHAT ANGELS FEAR followed by WHEN GODS DIE, WHY MERMAIDS SING, WHERE SERPENTS SLEEP, WHAT REMAINS OF HEAVEN, and WHERE SHADOWS DANCE. I really like them and could hardly wait until the last one came out (pre-ordered it at my library back in January.)

Late to the discussion as usual but have you read anything by Mary Jo Putney. Her fallen angels series is incredible and her latest series of the Lost Lords is excellent also. She's one of the few historical authors I still read.

This might be out of your comfort zone, but have you tried Kresley Cole's Immortal's After Dark series! It's great ! Love it! She also has a handful of early historicals if you're interested.
Also, Tessa Dare's always good. Reading her latest 'A Week To Be Wicked"

Yeah, I find it best if I read different kinds all the time and mix them up. Historical, mystery, contemperary, mideival, paranormal. Makes things intersting and you don't feel liek you're reading the same thing all the time. Glad I'm not the only one who does that, hehe.
