Hi All,

I read some good books this year before the slump hit me. Since the A- and B+ are so close and account for most of my year, going to keep this simple with my "solid A books" read in 2013.

Romance:

The Notorious Rake by Mary Balogh (9/92)
[Waite Trilogy - 3] (A Warm)
Trad Regency

The Conquest of Lady Cassandra by Madeline Hunter (3/13)
[Fairbourne Quartet - 2] (A Warm)
August 1798, Late Georgian ~ Early Regency England

Her Hesitant Heart by Carla Kelly (HH 1135 - 5/13)
[New Beginnings - 1] (A Subtle)
1876, Fort Laramie, Wyoming Territory
Domestic Violence - Teacher - Widower - Surgeon

Bodie Bride by Isabel Whitfield (HH 140 - 9/92)
(A Warm) -- New Author
1879, California - Frigid - Virgin - Tormented Hero

Mainstream Thrillers - Suspense - Mystery:

Her Last Breath by Linda Castillo (6/13)
[Kate Burkholder - 5] (A Implied Sex)
Amish

Suspect by Robert Crais (1/13)
(A N/A) -- PD - PTSD - K9
One of my most favorites of the year.

Touch & Go by Lisa Gardner (2/13)
[Tessa Leoni - 2] [D. D. Warren - 4]
(A N/A) -- PD and Private Security

The 9th Girl by Tami Hoag (6/13)
[Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska - 4] (A N/A)
PD - Serial Killer Thriller - Bullying - Poetry

Hope 2014 has loads of great books waiting for us.

Happy New Year!

Woo hoo! Another favorite post with lots of possibilities. Robin I'm happy you are loving Harlan Coben. Hands down he's my favorite author. Even without sex LOL.

My faves for the year:

Keeowee Valley by Katherine Scott Crawford.

Song for Sophia by Moriah Densley
Edge of Dawn by Lara Adrian
Six Years by Harlan Coben

Let the Dead Sleep by Heather Graham
Dangerous Refuge by Elizabeth Lowell
Taking Eve, Hunting Eve and Silencing Eve by Iris Johansen -- these 3 books make up a really good series
Whiskey Beach by Nora Roberts
A Rose at Midnight by Anne Stuart
Don't Cry for Me, Next of Kin and Til Death by Sharon Sala --another great series
Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris
Breath of Scandal by Sandra Brown
Wild Justice by Phillip Margolin
When Snow Falls by Brenda Novak (2nd in a series)
Justice for Sarah by Erica Spindler

Never Kiss a Rake by Anne Stuart
Deadline by Sandra Brown
Going Once by Sharon Sala
Wish You Well by David Baldacci
The Christmas Train by David Baldacci

I've had Jill Jones' Bloodlines in my TBR pile for years. Will have to dig it out soon.

Janie - Have you read the other books in Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder series? I've been collecting them because they sound like something that would interest me. Haven't tried them yet. Glad to see you liked this one so much.

I've read all of Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar series. Now I'm going through Myron withdrawl. But I'm happy that HC has so many standalone books for me to read.

I also would like to see a new book by SEP. She has to start writing faster.

My only true 5 this year was Blade Song by JC Daniels.

Almost 5's were any of the titles in the Dream Man series and Sadie and Hectors story in the Rock Chick series by Kristin Ashley

Robin--I got this book at the ubs. I read the back cover blurb and was intrigued by the modern-day Jack The Ripper storyline. I really enjoyed it; the two main characters were very likeable and there was a nice blend of suspense and romance.

I'm really picky about my 5-star books as well. I always assume the top score is reserved for absolute perfection...and almost nothing gets there. The top I usually rate a book is 4 1/2. And it is really difficult to pick a favorite...so many of my go-to authors had great books this year: JD Robb/Nora Roberts, Amanda Quick/Jayne Krentz, Nalini Singh, Karen Robards, Lisa Gardner, Tami Hoag, Mary Balogh, Susan Phillips, Maya Banks, Debra Webb, Carly Phillips, Iris Johansen, Linda Castillo, Jon Land, and too many more to list.

I discovered Kristen Ashley this year (although I started out of order) with Ride the Wind and then had to go back & read Motorcycle Man. Now I'm going back to the first in the series, Mystery Man.

If I have to pick an absolute favorite this year (yea, still can't pick one) I'd pick two: A Field of Poppies by Sharon Sala and Written in Red by Anne Bishop. Both are totally different (one is a family drama/mystery and the other is a paranormal, otherworld-type with shifters & vamps & fae) but they both are both beautifully written and completely captivating. I couldn't put either down (finished Written in Red at 3am...on a worknight yet!)

Yes, 2013 was a good year for books & booklovers. Can't wait to see what 2014 brings! Happy New Year, everyone.

I've had Written in Red on my wishlist since I read the review in the magazine. Your the first person I've seen that actually read it. Glad you liked it.

I had four books out of 166 that I rated as 5 stars this year. Three of them were M/M novels, which is a switch from previous years. The other was a reread that I still rate as a 5. However, one book I rated as a 5 I cannot remember why I rated it so high - on that alone I am demoting it to a 4.5, because if it was a "true" 5 for me I would remember the book. (Basically I had one 5 star book for every 55.3 books I read this year. Last year I had 20 5 star books (very high for me).)

Magic bleeds by Ilona Andrews
- I love this series and I'm glad that rereading has not diminished the books.

Nor Iron Bars a Cage by Kaje Harper - One of the best books I've read. The descriptions were beautiful and the story was a good fantasy story, which I don't normally like - warlocks, etc - but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hot Head by Damon Suede
- Wowza this was a hot book. I'm still waiting on the next in the series, but this was one you need some ice water for. It was a friends-to-lovers/gay-for-you book. Amazing!!

Aside from these four, several books I read by JD Robb, Cameron Dane, Kaje Harper and new to me author Patricia Briggs rated 4.5 or higher on a consistent basis, but never reached the 5 mark.

I only had ONE 5-Star rated book in 2013, and it was written (I believe) in 2010. :? It was MY DARLING CAROLINE by Adele Ashworth.

I have the first book in Ilona Andrews Magic series. I'm looking for the other books in the series. I've heard so many good things about this series.

I read this book several years ago. Definitely a 5 Star read.
