Amazon has announced their new kindles. They have the new pearl eink screen and are available for preorder now for the end of August. For those who bought a Kindle in the last 30 days I believe you can exchange it for new ones.

The new kindles have a 6" screen but are overall smaller than the old ones and they expanded the memory from 2gb to 4gb. Battery life is said to last up to 4 weeks with the wireless off.

I purchased my Kindle 1 in May of 2008 and it is still going strong. Have never had one lick of trouble with it, but I know I am living on borrowed time. It is so tempting to buy the new K3 and the price sure is right. I paid $399 for my K1 but never regretted it. It was worth every penny and has brought me many, many hours of reading pleasure. I know that technology changes so quickly and prices always fall, but you just have to accept that and take the plunge. The long battery life and the increased book capacity along with the ability to organize your books into collections sure is tempting. What to do? What to do?

I'll stick with my Kindle with 3G that I just got last month. I checked out the Kindle Wi-Fi and while it sounds good and it's a great price, I wouldn't want to be tracking down a wi-fi spot anytime I wanted to purchase an ebook. And, yes, I know I could install wi-fi at home. But, what if I'm not at home and not near a Starbucks! (yeah, I know wi-fi is all over) There are a lot of places we travel that I have a better shot at getting a 3G signal than finding a wi-fi.

I wonder how long til they're under $100?! I bought my Sony for $299 I think a few years ago and now they're even cheaper. I can't say I really got my money's worth though since I do still prefer an actual book in my hands but I'm trying to adjust LOL!

Rumor on some of the "tech blogs" is by Christmas.

I paid $299 for my Sony Reader and I use my regularly.

I am sticking with the Nook for now. I just got it and I am loving it. I don't think I have picked up a paper book yet. I know I will have to at some point since I have so much back log to read, plus new stuff coming out (like Linda Howard's new book...not in ebook!). But I really felt like I didn't need the 3G on the Kindle or Nook since I have WiFi at home and it seems like you can get it anywhere! Not to mention that if I am somewhere that I JUST CAN'T get WiFi, I always have my laptop that I can use my Verizon MIFI, manually hook up my Nook and buy from B&N. By the time my Nook wears out...there is NO TELLING what will be available or how cheap it may be.

I agree Kyle. The changes seem to come almost every week! The one thing I will say, after playing around with the Ipad is that I could not read for long on that backlit screen, especailly after working on a computer while at work. That is the one huge advantage of the Kindle and Nook, the Eink feature. The Ipad is heavy, and would never work with my hand surgery either.

I love my Kindle, and am reading about 75% of my new books on it. The only ones that I buy now are authors that I collect, and still want the hardcopy version.

I'm glad you are enjoying your Nook - I love mine. :D :D Only thing I regret is not waiting a couple extra months - I paid $259 for mine - no other options at that time. But even so I still love it!! If you need any help just give me a holler! :)

I can't see forking out more money for a Kindle when I just got my Nook about a month ago. I've read 9 books on it so far & like it a lot. Of course I still have a few paperbacks to read in my TBR pile, so I'm reading through those too.

Only problem I find with my Nook is that it is too easy to buy books.

Amen to that! I have a Kindle but suffer from the same weakness. It is just so easy and too tempting to hit that "Buy With One Click" button! Someone on a board somewhere suggested buying an Amazon gift certificate for yourself each month to control the book-buying budget. I am going to give that a whirl and see if it helps.

That is why Amazon has been so successful, LOL. That one click buying will get you every time! But the gift certificate is a great idea.

I also noticed when I went to my local Coinstar that if you take the money in cash, they charge a counting fee of 10% but if you get a gift certificate they don't. So they have Amazon gift certificates. Yay! I just got back almost $50 from all my spare change in my little coin jar, went online, entered the number, and got the books I wanted, no problem.

So here is another way to find money for more books but limit what you spend so you don't end up with tons of books you never get around to reading.
